Bremen University of Applied Sciences (HSB) has approximately 8,500 students and five faculties. HSB's “Region in Transition” research cluster works with partners from industry and society to develop solutions in the fields of renewable energies, environmental resources and their sustainable use, as well as architecture and urban development.

Research topics focusing on environmental resources include:

- Development of processes for the bioconversion of renewable raw materials to obtain valuable substances and energy sources

- Bio-based fiber composites

- Use of microalgae and duckweed to close material cycles

- Downstream processing of micro- and macroalgae biomass to obtain enzymes, dyes, feed supplements, and lubricants

The technical equipment includes laboratories and a greenhouse for cultivating microalgae and duckweed, sterilization technology, fermentation technology, processing technology, molecular biology, natural fiber analysis, and general analytics.
