The Chair of Aquaculture and Sea Ranching conducts research on various topics related to aquaculture. The main areas of focus are aquatic disease sciences, fish larval rearing, and aquaponic fish and plant culture. A two-year master's program in aquaculture teaches core competencies in the field of limnic and marine production of aquatic organisms. The main areas of research at the Chair of Aquaculture and Sea Ranching at the University of Rostock are limnic and marine breeding of aquatic organisms, combined fish and plant production (aquaponics), animal welfare in aquaculture, and aquatic parasitology and bacteriology. In addition, aquatic organisms are used as biological indicators to describe the effects of aquaculture on the environment.
