Competence Center Algal Biotechnology (CAB)

In the Competence Center Algae Biotechnology (CAB) we have been working for more than 20 years on the development of technologies for the extraction of valuable and active substances from microalgae (including biorefinery processes), the establishment of new processes for biomass production and processing, the energetic utilization of residual biomasses to biogas (establishment of closed material cycles) as well as the development of new algae products for the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, chemical and energy sectors (algae filling station, Real Ocean Blue...). In this context, we have a high level of experience in the metabolic physiology of different algae genera as well as in the product isolation and analysis of algae ingredients (carotenoids, sulfolipids, omega-3 fatty acids, PHA, peptides/proteins, vitamins, active pharmaceutical ingredients). We have our own algae strain collection (KASC) with more than 300 own isolates (esp. green, diatom, red algae, cyanobacteria), which can be cultivated from laboratory to pilot scale in flat panel and TBR reactors and processed for product recovery.
