The University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in Germany and the Baltic Sea region. The university has close ties to other universities and research institutes in the Baltic Sea region, and the cultures of the Baltic Sea region are among its main areas of research. The University of Greifswald sees itself as a research university. Its research strength derives primarily from the intensive interdisciplinary cooperation between five faculties, including the University Medical Center. In close cooperation with regional, national, and international research partners and on the basis of an excellent research infrastructure, five main areas of research and newly developing fields of research are being pursued that address major issues and social challenges of our time: health and prevention, environment and climate, energy and raw materials, and opportunities and risks of globalization.
