The AstaOptiForm project develops innovative astaxanthin products with a focus on high stability and optimal bioavailability. Not only is the composition of the products improved, but the manufacturing processes (known as downstream processes) are also further optimised.
Sea & Sun Technology GmbH already produces dietary supplements with natural astaxanthin from microalgae – currently in the form of gelatin softgel capsules. A pilot process has been developed for this purpose, covering everything from algae cultivation to processing.
In order to develop new, consumer-friendly products, AstaOptiForm combines market research with scientific findings. This involves:
User needs are identified through proprietary market analyses.
Scientific aspects such as bioavailability and stability are taken into account.
Production processes are specifically adapted to new product requirements.
The goal is to develop not only dietary supplements but also cosmetic products containing astaxanthin. It is crucial that the new formulations are easy to take and deliver optimal results.
In the course of the project, we are investigating which dosage form – e.g. capsules, powder or liquids – is most suitable for consumers. Based on these findings, production will be further optimised.
At the end of AstaOptiForm, practical product samples will be available that can be directly incorporated into SST's portfolio. This will result in a diverse, stable product range that increases the market potential of astaxanthin from microalgae.
In the long term, the project will contribute to greater acceptance of microalgae-based products and their establishment as a sustainable alternative in the blue bioeconomy of northern Germany.
